Introduction to Scuba & Underwater Photography

Xposure is a great place to start your journey into Scuba Diving & Underwater Photography. All equipment provided.

You don’t need to have any previous diving experience to be able to dive. In fact, you don’t even need to know how to swim!

The class will consist of 30 minutes of classroom training on the use of scuba equipment and tips for taking pictures underwater. This will be followed by a 20-minute practice in our indoor tank. The tank will provide a safe environment and you will be accompanied by a professional dive instructor from Royal Diving, at all times. There are individual changing facilities on-site.

Besides using scuba to take photographs, it can become an activity that is good for your health and even good for our oceans and environment should you decide to take up a PADI certified training course after your initial introduction at Xposure.

This workshop is limited to two students only but repeats daily.

Studio Lighting for e-commerce & Commercial Portraits

Colin Hawkins is a professional, freelance commercial photographer who runs a busy studio in the UK has been supplying images of models & corporate portraits to clients for over 20 years that have been commissioned for use in promotion, catalogues, magazines, adverts and on the web.

This 4-hour workshop gives a hands-on opportunity to enhance your photographic skills in studio lighting techniques for photographing models & people in a studio environment & will mainly concentrate on:

Lighting for e-commerce fashion
Simple lighting for commercial portraits
Some creative portrait lighting techniques

Are you thinking of buying some lights to photograph people?
The choice & range of equipment is possibly overwhelming so perhaps watch & then learn if these will be the right sort of lights or the necessary equipment that would be suitable for what you would like to achieve & get hands-on experience using this type of equipment before you buy.

This workshop is especially aimed at small businesses and individuals who have little or no experience of photographing people using studio lighting but would like to learn a variety of lighting techniques in a very simple way without spending a fortune on lighting equipment that might not be suitable.

The workshop is limited in numbers to ensure individual help and attention. Participants will also experience the skills and techniques learnt by others in the group.

Wildlife Tourism Uncovered

Wildlife Tourism is a $250 billion dollar per year industry. But these profits don’t come without costs. The animals we love to take selfies and interact with, ride, and stare at, have often been stolen from the wild, their families killed in the process. They then spend the rest of their lives behind bars at zoos and amusement parks or exploited for entertainment purposes.

Aaron Gekoski has spent the past four years travelling the world, documenting the Wildlife Tourism industry. From Thailand’s boxing orangutans and Indonesia’s travelling dolphin circuses to Petra’s working animals and Morocco’s tree-climbing goats, his imagery has appeared all over the global media.

In this seminar, he discusses our complex relationship with the Wildlife Tourism industry, whilst offering insights into some of his photographic investigations.

Photo Mechanics

If there are holes in your photographic knowledge, if you get confused by f-stop, aperture, iso, focal length and shutter speed, or if you feel that you could be in better control of your camera, this workshop is for you.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, or have some experience but find you aren’t getting the images you want, then making sure you’ve got the basics covered will help open up opportunities for you.

Every photograph starts with the balancing of an equation. If you can’t see the light and find the solution to the problem, you’ll only get so far with your pictures. Taking the basics and making them second nature should be your goal.

We’ll cover exposure, camera settings, autofocus settings and the basics of composition to make sure that your foundations are as firm as possible on which you can build your advanced, specific knowledge for the subjects you wish to tackle.

Magical Mystery of Light

Bright light doesn’t mean it’s ‘Good’ light and low light doesn’t mean it’s ‘bad’ light. All light is good. The trick to creating beautiful eye-catching images is to match the light appropriately to the image you are taking. To use light and shade to create a mood and provoke emotions and take your viewers on a journey.

In this workshop, you’ll discover how to ‘see’ light and its qualities. How to use it appropriately and how, just by moving a tiny amount or waiting just a moment, you can exploit it.

If you’re new to photography this workshop will give you direction and help you understand that photography is not all about settings, it’s about seeing. More experienced photographers will gain insight and expand their skills.

How to shoot a Personal Project

You may already have an idea for something you’d like to photograph, so how do you set about turning this idea into a personal project and a striking body of work that will showcase your photography? It sounds easy, but if you just pick up your camera and start shooting without a plan or clear direction you’ll inevitably hit problems that you could have foreseen and avoided.

The investment of time you put into planning and developing the project from the beginning, and importantly before you start shooting, is vital. It will not only save you time and frustration when you’re shooting but also lead to a more coherent set of images and a stronger visual story.

In this workshop we’ll take an in-depth look at everything from the initial project idea, developing a project plan, trying to anticipate and pre-empt the possible problems you may encounter – both conceptual and practical. We’ll look at different approaches to shooting and explore how you can use these to enhance and improve your images and visual story. We’ll think through how to execute it to put together a set of images that not only shows your skill as a photographer but also showcase your vision. T0 finish, we’ll look at how you get your project and images to be seen by a wider audience.

The Depiction of Architecture: Historical Precedents and Contemporary Applications

In this discussion, award-winning architectural photographer Steven Brooke will examine the paradigms of the 600-year tradition of architectural documentation and their applications for contemporary architectural photography.

Referencing the work of genre painters such as Vermeer and deHooch, viewpainters such as Piranesi and Canaletto, and modern masters such as Edward Hopper, Giorgio de Chirico, and Hugh Ferris, the talk will explore the rules for vertical and horizontal alignment; the use of border verticals for exteriors, interiors and streetscapes; proportional systems; standard shapes for architectural depiction; precise timing for exacting shadow control; and the attainable goal of compositional excellence.

Light the World

If you’re an ‘ambient light only’ photographer, then you’re missing out on a lot of picture-taking opportunities.

Light is the basis of all we do as photographers, so if you’re not using some light of your own creation, you’re not maximising the images you can capture.  An understanding of flash is key to being able to sculpt and shape your images, whether shooting in a studio or out on location.
With the use of Speedlites and portable flash, this workshop will take you from Speedlite nothing to Speedlite Specialist.

This workshop will cover the basics and then more advance techniques to get you using flash both indoors and outdoors on location with a model, mixing flash with ambient light so that you will learn how to adapt and shoot on location where things constantly change.

Photo Alchemy

We crave the buzz of capturing images in new eye-catching, vibrant and powerful ways. We want to tell a story, re-create the beauty and experience of a place, person, or object. To turn boring into brilliant and find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Before we can claim our treasure, we have to travel the rainbow by exercising our ability to see and imagine how we want an image to look – and combine creativity with technical skills to transform the vision into reality. How do you do that?

Photography Outside the Box

Breaking the rules and thinking outside the box is something a photographer should always consider.
Getting out of your comfort zone, doing something different, breaking the trend, adding some abstracts and conceptual thoughts to your photography is what will differentiate you from others. You do not want to be that photographer whose only aim is to hoard equipment and excel settings. Photography is a form of art and there should be a message behind it.

Inside the War on ISIS

In 2017 during the Battle of Mosul, Czech videographer Jana Andert worked alongside elite Iraqi Special Forces tasked with attacking ISIS in the city they had occupied in 2014. With excerpts from her subsequent documentary Inside Mosul, she talks with Ray Wells about how she got there and stayed there for eight months, gaining the trust of men who would lose nearly half of their fellow commandos in the fierce fighting for Iraq’s second city.

It is a story of courage, determination and an overwhelming belief in bearing witness.
