Conflict Reporting to Magical Realism

As conflict reporters, we often find ourselves drawn to the most traumatic and devastating moments in human history, often capturing victims at their most vulnerable. While we may have permission to do so, this can hinder an individual's healing process as they cope with what has happened. Elisa Iannacone is a cinematographer, photographer, author, and advocate for equality and human rights. With experience on six continents and clients, including Newsweek, National Geographic, Vice, and the BBC, Iannacone's work examines the human condition during crises and the aftermath of trauma, including covering the Rabaa massacre in Cairo and domestic violence in refugee camps in Iraq. In this talk, Iannacone discusses her journey from conflict reporter to finding new ways to tell meaningful stories, emphasizing the intimacy and connection that underpins her process. She also explores the idea of using art as a form of justice, and a means for healing and how involving survivors of abuse in the creative process can empower them. Can the camera be a tool to express trauma in a way that promotes healing? Join Iannacone as she delves into these questions and more.

Minimalism and Light Painting

In this focus group we will look at how lighting can transform ordinary objects. I will provide examples of leaves, flowers, and other subjects to the group. My goal is to inspire others to think outside the box and develop their own techniques while photographing their preferred subjects. Born and raised in St.Petersburg, Russia, I was exposed to the arts as a child and fell in love with the lighting and color that surrounded the city. I began expressing myself creatively through coloring books and photography as a child. About 5 years ago, I discovered light painting which allowed me to combine my passion for coloring and photography. I began experimenting and, as a result, developed my own light painting technique. I am currently working with leaves, flowers, and experimenting with larger subjects such as people and cars.

Book Signing with Pedro Jarque Krebs

Pedro Jarque Krebs will be available to sign personalised copies of his Book "Fragile"   There are few things more fascinating than the diversity of the animal kingdom - and it’s a wonder under immense threat. The latest figures estimate that 60 percent of all animal populations on our planet have been wiped out in the last 50 years. Pedro Jarque Krebs (1963, Lima - Peru), a multi-award-winning wildlife photographer, focuses his lens on this fragile natural world to draw attention to its precarious situation. His photographs aim to break down the psychological and emotional barriers that separate us from our fellow creatures, capturing every animal - whether a bird, a reptile, or a big cat―in an atmosphere of breathtaking intimacy. Beautiful and humbling, his images give the animals their full and due dignity. They remind us that we are not the center of the universe, and that our most important project is to protect the intricate ecosystem of which we are just a small, constituent part. “My goal with these images is to raise our awareness of the beauty and diversity of the natural world, but―even more importantly―its dreadful fragility and endangerment.” Pedro Jarque Krebs

Credible Witness

Join renowned photojournalists Muhammed Muheisen, Giles Clarke, Jodi Cobb, Tommy Trenchard and former Sunday Times picture editor Ray Wells in conversation with Aidan Sullivan as they share some of their experiences of the most compelling and dangerous stories of our time. Photojournalists play a vital role in documenting and bringing attention to the darker aspects of our world, often risking their own safety in pursuing important stories. They serve as our eyes in the darkness and use powerful images to shed light on important issues and inspire change. Unfortunately, support for photojournalism has disappeared, along with many traditional media outlets that once provided financial assistance. Even those that remain often avoid offering insurance and long-term support due to their risk-averse nature. Despite these challenges, Muheisen, Clarke, Cobb, and Trenchard remain dedicated photojournalists who continue to take risks and put themselves in harm's way to report on important stories. They run towards danger rather than away from it, but at what cost? It is said that bearing witness to traumatic events can take a toll on an individual, leaving them with pieces of those experiences forever. How do photojournalists survive and cope with the accumulative nature of these demanding events? Why do they endure such challenges to bring these important stories to light?
