This is a half-day workshop aimed mainly at parents who want to go beyond the standard snapshots in capturing their kids through their childhood years. You should have a basic technical understanding of how to use your camera (the class would build on the “Get off Auto” and “Composition” courses, but they are not prerequisites). The workshop will focus on drawing out the emotive side of photography and capturing the all-important moments and details that tug on a parent’s heartstrings.

This is a half day workshop aimed mainly at parents who want to go beyond the standard snapshots in capturing their kids through their childhood years. You should have a basic technical understanding of how to use your camera (the class would build on the “Get off Auto” and “Composition” courses, but they are not prerequisites). The workshop will focus on drawing out the emotive side of photography and capturing the all important moments and details that tug on a parents heartstrings.

This workshop is led by Kirsty Larmour, a lifestyle photographer who has taught the art of capturing kids in an informal style across the world, both in person and online.

Workshop Content:

  • Brief overview of how to make the most of your camera – basic settings that work well to capture kids in different environments
  • Composition basics – how to utilise different compositional elements to bring out the details you love – eg negative space, framing, rule of thirds, leading lines
  • Lighting basics – how to use different types of light to enhance how you capture kids, and infuse mood into photos
  • Focus basics – where to put your focal point to draw out important elements of the story you’re telling
  • Discussion of different photography genres – the difference between lifestyle, storytelling and environmental photography.
  • How to use portrait photography skills in informal settings
  • Emotion – how to truthfully tell the story evolving in front of you
  • Using the 5 senses to create a feeling in your photos
  • Moving beyond the pose – capturing your kids authentically
  • Don’t say cheese – meaningful faceless and non smiling photos
  • Personality – learn techniques to capture your kids real selves
  • Using sensitivity and creativity while capturing important moments
  • Capturing the mess – the extra details that tell the stories
  • How to choose the meaningful moments and make your photos count
  • Exercises to try different creative techniques
  • A portion of the class will be devoted to shooting and trying out new techniques
  • Feedback and critique will be given on photos taken in class
  • Exercises to try at home with your own children

What to Bring:

Your camera with memory card. One of your kids favourite toys.
